| Thought to have been the oldest city in Syria, Ebla was only discovered in 1964 and is still in the process of excavation, giving its visitors an excellent glimpse into archeological work in progress. The site spreads itself out over the rolling fertile plains of Northern Syria, and is believed to have been the center of an important north Syrian empire. A walk to the top of the unexcavated part of the tell reveals a view of the entire site: a city surrounded by circular walls with four gates. Just south of Aleppo, Ebla makes a perfect day-trip from Aleppo. |
