| One of the most interesting and visited of the ’dead cities’ near Aleppo, Serjilla, located in a natural basin opening out to the south, comprises extensive remains of a complete Byzantine settlement, including houses, a church, baths, tombs and sarcophagi. The double porticoed andron, or meeting place for men, is described as ’one of the most perfectly preserved structures in all the ruined and deserted towns in Syria.’ The impressive triple-naved church is one of the oldest in the region dating back to 372 A.D.
