Jordan River

Meandering through the Jordan Rift Valley is the River Jordan, a sacred stream of great historical and symbolic significance. The Prophets Joshua, Elijah, Elisha, and John the Baptist and Jesus Christ were all said to have crossed it during their lifetimes. The areas along the river associated with their deeds, just 45 minutes by car from Amman, and the recently-identified baptism site, known as al-Maghtas in Arabic, are protected and accessible to visitors.
